Library

The library is situated in the Academic Centre and is open Monday to Friday (9am to 5pm - out of hours access is also available during the evenings and weekends). Northallerton VTS Trainees have access to use the library facilities at both the Friarage Hospital and the James Cook University Hospital.

Our librarian, Mr Hugh Hanchard and our library assistant, Miss Ida Atkinson are on hand with a wealth of knowledge and information to help with your enquiries.

Resources

We have the following resources available to GP trainees…

  • Over 7000 books are in stock at the Friarage with a further 12000 books available at James Cook. You can also search for (and renew) books using the library catalogue on the Internet. http://southtees.nhslibraries.com
  • Approximately 50 journals covering most aspects of Medicine, Nursing and Mental Health. Back issues (normally 10 years) are also stored in the library.
  • There are 7 open access computers. If you don’t have a South Tees login library staff can log you on to the computers. All computers have Internet access and are linked to printers.
  • The library has a quiet study area which can accommodate 8 people - lockers are available for use by library customers.

Electronic resources

There are a wide range of electronic resources, which can be accessed at work or at home. These resources include…

  • CKS - Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) are an excellent source of practical, evidence-based information for the most common conditions managed in primary or first-contact care. These are regularly updated and give information on diagnosis, management of the condition, treatment; as well as concise summaries how to manage 500 clinical situations (scenarios).
  • Databases - search the major medical, nursing and health management databases such as Medline, CINAHL, Psycinfo, British Nursing Index.
  • E-journals - get the full text of over 1500 journals on your computer screen. Major journal titles from medicine, nursing, allied health, psychology and health management are included.
  • E-books - access the full text of over 400 books including titles from a range of publishers. These include a comprehensive mental health collection, a selection of Oxford Textbooks and books covering many other topic areas.
  • Images - a range of images from the fields of anatomy, dermatology, paediatrics trauma and cardiology.

General Enquiry Service - Looking for some information (clinical or otherwise) but not sure where to start? Speak to a member of staff — we can usually help.

Interlibrary Loans - Books and journal articles not in stock can be obtained through the interlibrary loans service at a small charge.

Database Searches - library staff can search the medical, nursing or psychiatric databases for any topic you request.

Information Skills Training - Library staff can provide training in using the electronic resources listed below.
